Anxiety
Anxiety is an emotion we may all occasionally feel around stressors such as finances, relationships, health, etc. For some, the anxiety is at such a high level that it interferes with one's ability to function and can interfere with job performance, schoolwork, relationships and self-esteem. Common symptoms of anxiety are: Feeling nervous, restless or tense Having a sense of impending danger, panic or doom Having an increased heart rate Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation) Sweating Trembling Feeling weak or tired Trouble concentrating or thinking about anything other than the present worry Having trouble sleeping Experiencing gastrointestinal (GI) problems Having difficulty controlling worry Having the urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and various phobia-related disorders. There are various ways to approach treatment for anxiety and we would tailor a treatment plan for you and your needs. This may include mindfulness, breathing exercises, CBT, EFT and ART.
Depression
We all have days we feel down, though for some, this can persist and impact one's ability to function and can have a negative impact on employment, relationships, health and self-esteem. If you experience these symptoms for at least 2 weeks, you may be experiencing depression: Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions Difficulty sleeping, waking early in the morning, or oversleeping Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not have a clear physical cause and do not go away with treatment Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts People who experience depression may feel irritable, may withdraw from loved ones, may self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, problems with sexual desire, difficulty with basic self-care. Trauma
Trauma is real or perceived threat that overwhelms the nervous system. There are many different traumatic experiences, including, but not limited to, physical or sexual assault, emotional abuse, domestic violence, bullying, combat experience, car accident, natural disaster, loss of a loved one, medical trauma, religious trauma, racial trauma. One's experience to and impact from trauma can vary, though common symptoms among trauma survivors are: Recurrent distressing memories and/or dreams of the traumatic event Flashbacks where the individual feels as if they’re experiencing the trauma again Intense psychological distress when exposed to triggers that resemble the traumatic event or remind the individual of the traumatic event Difficulty falling or staying asleep Lack of interest in activities he or she used to enjoy Feelings of detachment from others or everyday life Inability to experience positive emotions, such as happiness and fulfillment Reckless or self-destructive behavior We have learned more about how trauma effects the brain and sits in the body, which has lead to very effective healing from trauma, such as EMDR and ART. I have used EMDR for trauma treatment since I was trained in 2016. I became certified in ART in 2022 and am in awe of the rapid relief of trauma symptoms.
Grief
The loss of a loved one can be so painful. Sometimes we can plan for the loss of a loved one, such as an ailing grandparent, and other times the loss can be sudden and unexpected, such as an accident. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is not timetable and here is no "getting over it." There is still living a full life after the loss of a loved one and finding ways to stay connected in spirit. As David Kessler describes, "each person's grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed." I would love to be that witness for you and there are tools to explore if your grief feels it is not moving and feels "stuck." An approach that is highly effective is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).
